The European Investment Bank (EIB), the European Union and the Moroccan Ministry of Economy and Finance have signed two agreements for the financing of an investment programme based on the construction of 150 community schools and supporting infrastructure within several Regional Academies of Education and Training (AREF), located mainly in rural areas of the kingdom.

The EIB loan, for a total of 102.5 million EUR (over one billion dirhams) is supplemented by a grant of 23.30 million EUR (245 million dirhams) from the European Union, under the neighbourhood investment platform, comprising of an investment grant of 14 million EUR and 9.3 million EUR in technical assistance to support the implementation of the project.

On top of this package, the Moroccan government has contributed around 100 million EUR from its general budget to cover the remainder of the project costs.

These financial contributions from the EIB and the European Union are part of the 2015-2030 reform of the education sector in the Kingdom of Morocco, which aims to bolster equity in access to education throughout the country, focusing on the inclusion of girls and equality of opportunities, in order to achieve genuine educational renewal.

This operation complements other EU-backed education projects currently underway in Morocco, in particular the Integrated Training and Education Support Programme in Morocco (PIAFE).
