TunisiaEU Police Mission advocates for gender equality at meeting with Palestinian Police
At a meeting of Palestinian police officers working on gender issues on 6 October 2020, supported by the European Union Police and Rule of Law Mission (EUPOL COPPS), the Mission congratulated the Palestinian Civil Police (PCP) on its efforts to advance gender equality and promised continued support in this area.
The PCP and EUPOL COPPS have a longstanding cooperation on gender issues. For example, in collaboration with UN women, progress was made last year on developing a curriculum for the basic training of new police officers that includes a stronger gender component. The Mission also recently supported the PCP to promote a new telephone hotline to combat gender-based violence.
The meeting of the police officers on 6 October was the first time that people working on gender issues in the PCP in all 11 Palestinian districts were able to meet with the new head of the gender unit, Lt. Colonel Abla Abu Rub. The meeting provided an opportunity for open discussion on the common challenges that they face, as well as propose possible solutions.
EUPOL COPPS is the European Union Co-ordinating Office for Palestinian Police Support. The aim of the Mission is to contribute to the establishment of sustainable and effective policing arrangements and to advise Palestinian counterparts on criminal justice and rule of law related aspects under Palestinian ownership.
