TunisiaEU-funded COMMON project: start of monitoring activities of beach litter in Tunisia
The EU-funded COMMON and CLAIM projects have partnered to carry out a beach litter monitoring activity in La Goulette, in the suburbs of Tunis, Tunisia.
More than 200 plastic bags, 45 cans and 800 cigarette butts were collected in an hour.
The data collected will be useful to survey the amount of trash thrown into the marine environment but also its source and to act for finding specific solutions and for changing behaviours.
The COMMON project, funded under the ENI CBC Med Programme, applies the Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) principles to the challenge of marine litter, improving knowledge of the phenomenon, enhancing the environmental performance of 5 pilot coastal areas in Italy, Tunisia and Lebanon, and engaging local stakeholders in marine litter management.
CLAIM targets the prevention and in-situ management of both micro- and macroplastics, through the development of both new technologies and redefined methodological approaches to innovate the ways in which we clean and monitor our seas. The project will power 5 innovative technologies, which will prevent litter from entering the sea and will monitor plastic debris. This project receives funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.
