A sound public health is essential to build a sustainable and resilient society. Access to health care is both a human right and an imperative for social cohesion and economic growth. The EU is working with its Southern Neighbourhood partners to support health-related reforms, strengthen health systems and ensure universal health coverage and access to care. At a larger scale, the EU also contributes to the prevention of diseases, supporting its partners in strengthening their capacities to respond effectively to health threats, including communicable diseases. It promotes participation in research programmes, such as Horizon 2020, which contribute to the advancement of medical research and treatment.
