On 5 June, World Environment Day, the EU launched the platform ‘Ozun Yarat’ (‘Do It Yourself’) in Azerbaijan, which is designed to collect and share creative ideas for repurposing and reusing items.

The platform was developed in partnership with the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources (MENR) of Azerbaijan. It aims to raise awareness about saving resources and to collect innovative ideas to that end, as well as to encourage upcycling amongst people in Azerbaijan. The best three ideas shared on the platform will be awarded.

“This initiative is in line with the EU’s Green Deal and the new Circular Economy Action Plan,” said EU Ambassador to Azerbaijan Kęstutis Jankauskas.

“We have an ambition to lead in changing our lives and our behaviour for a more sustainable production and preservation of our planet. We want to do that by working together with our partners.”

To raise awareness about the platform amongst as many people as possible, the Young European Ambassadors (YEAs) from Azerbaijan joined efforts with the EU and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and went live on Facebook on 5 June. The live streaming was hosted by ‘EU NEIGHBOURS east’ project on its Facebook page, featuring conversation between representatives of the three partners.

Asif Gurbanov, the YEA from Azerbaijan, Jasur Hasanov,  the Head of the UNDP’s experimentation lab and Arzu Samadova, Deputy Chief of the Biodiversity Protection Service under the MENR. They informed their peers about recycling and upcycling as ways to contribute to protecting the environment, discussed current threats to biodiversity.

The information campaign around the platform aims to draw attention to the main topic of World Environment Day 2020 – biodiversity.

The Ozun Yarat platform was designed within the regional initiative ‘EU4Climate’. The initiative is funded by the EU and implemented by the UNDP and aims to help accelerate climate action in the six Eastern partner countries.
