On 16 November, the EU’s high-level officials congratulated Maia Sandu, the winner of the recent presidential elections in the Republic of Moldova.

President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, addressed Moldova’s newly elected president on Twitter, saying “your victory is a clear call to tackle corruption and restore respect for the rule of law – the path to a prosperous future”.

“The people of Moldova have clearly chosen a course that prioritises justice, a real fight against corruption and a more just society,” added Charles Michel, President of the European Council.

Oliver Valeriy said the EU is “looking forward to working with the new president on the implementation of our Association Agreement/DCFTA, and the reforms, to the benefit of the people”.

EU High Representative, Josep Borrell, said the "[E]lection victory is a clear reflection of people’s expectations for a better life without corruption, based on democratic norms upheld by all. "
